چکیده

This is a first-person narrative of a dentist's slow slide into alcohol and drug abuse, his denial in the face of a professional intervention, and his eventual acceptance of personal responsibility and recovery. There is also a discussion of the dentist diversion program in Minnesota.

Lift and down-gradient shear-induced diffusion in red blood cell suspensions.

The distribution of red blood cells (RBCs) in a confined channel flow is inhomogeneous and shows a marked depletion near the walls due to a competition between migration away from the walls and shear-induced diffusion resulting from interactions between particles. We investigated the lift of RBCs in a shear flow near a wall and measured a significant lift velocity despite the tumbling motion of...

HIV surveillance, public health, and clinical medicine--will the walls come tumbling down?

685 the lessons that can be drawn from this experiment. For example, the results are naturally specific to the study’s population, insurance plan, and health care environment. Coverage by private insurance, in different settings, or of people with very different characteristics than those who enrolled in Oregon’s Medicaid program might have very different effects. Moreover, the Oregon lottery i...

Enhancing Performance of Infill Masonry With Skin reinforcement Subjected To Cyclic Load

Masonry infill has been widely used as building material due to its cost effectiveness and availability.  The failure of these masonry infill walls during the past earthquakes have underscored the importance of ensuring the safety of the infill walls when it is subjected to lateral loads. In-plane and out of plane failures have been observed in many reinforced concrete framed building with maso...

Sedimentation of spheroidal bodies near walls in viscous fluids: glancing, reversing, tumbling and sliding

The sedimentation of a rigid particle near a wall in a viscous fluid has been studied numerically by many authors, but analytical solutions have been derived only for special cases such as the motion of spherical particles. In this paper the method of images is used to derive simple ordinary differential equations describing the sedimentation of arbitrarily oriented prolate and oblate spheroids...

Dynamics of prolate spheroidal elastic particles in confined shear flow.

We investigate through numerical simulations the dynamics of a neo-Hookean elastic prolate spheroid suspended in a Newtonian fluid under shear flow. Both initial orientations of the particle within and outside the shear plane and both unbounded and confined flow geometries are considered. In unbounded flow, when the particle starts on the shear plane, two stable regimes of motion are found, i.e...
